28 March :: Barry Clewit and June Hayes - A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald Take a voice likened to that of Peggy Lee, Astrud Gilberto & Julie London, wrap it with a big band sound, add a huge sprinkling of Duke Ellington nostalgia, and you have a recipe for a fabulous grand finale to the ‘Jazz on the Coast' Winter Concert Series 2008. Rodney's own jazz diva June Hayes is well known throughout the country as the jazz singer with the ‘smooth as silk voice', and performs regularly with the June Hayes Quartet for corporate, private functions and festivals, crossing musical genres from jazz to classic pop hits. She is also the brains behind the ‘Jazz on the Coast' Winter Concert Series event. June and the fabulous twelve piece Barry Clewett Showband, lead by the maestro himself will bring the series to a close by paying tribute to one of the world's jazz greats – Duke Ellington, featuring many of his well known tunes such as Satin Doll, and Don't Get Around Much Anymore. Since the showband was formed, Barry – a highly respected jazz pianist, arranger and big band leader, has written and arranged numerous charts earning the band a reputation for being one of the most versatile big bands in Auckland, and beyond, attracting numerous enquiries to perform at Festivals, Corporate Events and Private Functions. A highlight performance was the bands self produced ‘Back to Bacharach' tribute show to the musical genious of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. |

5 April (Easter Monday) :: Gumbo True Blues Band Gumbo is a blues band with strong jazz leanings. Sometimes it’s a jazz band playing blues! The rhythm section of Owen Kneebone (drums) and Glyn Frewin (bass), with John Wilcox (piano) are pure swinging jazz. The top end of Jack Craw (harmonica, vocals) and Neil Finlay (guitar, vocals) play blues from driving to sweet, New Orleans to Chicago and rhythm-driven. A real mess of gumbo!
